Abstract

July 15, 1924, Exhaust-silencers.-A silencer comprises an expansion chamber A into which the gases are admitted through an expanding nozzle Band one or more Venturi tubes D through which alone the gases can escape, each Venturi tube being spaced from the inlet so that the gases can expand in the chamber before escaping. As shown in Fig. 1, a cylindrical casing A<1> is fitted with baffle plates C to which the tubes are secured by flanges D<1>, and each plate has a cupped part C<1> opposite the adjacent Venturi tube. In a modification, the Venturi tubes are all in alignment and perforated partitions are provided across the casing between the ends of adjacent Venturi tubes. In other forms, the Venturi tubes vary in size from one end of the silencer to the other, or one baffle plate may be fitted with a single Venturi tube and adjacent plates with two or more smaller Venturi tubes.
