533,135. Silencing gaseous currents. BURGESS BATTERY CO. Oct. 12, 1939, No. 27762. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1938. [Class 7 (ii)] Means for silencing engine exhaust, the intake and delivery of air compressors, or other gaseous currents comprises a casing 1 in which is arranged a perforated pipe 2 closed at one end and having its other open end arranged in line with an inlet pipe 3, but separated therefrom by a chamber 4a with an exit, for example, at 4. The blasts of exhaust entering at 3 pass into the pipe 2 and are expanded into the casing 1, before returning into the pipe 2 and out by the exit 4, together with other portions of the gases which are byepassed directly to the exit 4 through the chamber 4a. In a modification the pipes 2, 3 are eccentrically arranged in the casing 1, and the exit 4 is replaced by a further perforated pipe which extends through the casing 1 from the chamber 4a to an exit at the other end of the casing. The device may be used in conjunction with a silencer for attenuating high-frequency vibrations, such as that described in Specification 312,937, [Class 7 (ii)].
