Abstract

442,438. Exhaust silencers. SALENIUS, C. G. T., 13, Tomtebogatan, Stockholm. July 31, 1934, No. 22313. [Class 7 (ii)] The silencer comprises a casing 10 connected to the engine exhaust at 11, the interior of the casing being in communication through a tube 15 with a closed chamber 14 which, in a modification, may be located outside the casing. The open end of tube 15 faces the oncoming gases, but is shielded from the direct gas flow by one or more screens 16, 18 which materially restrict the passage for the gases. The effect of such screens is stated to set up ejector action and vortex motions, with the result that low pressures are created in the chamber 14 which cause gases to enter that chamber during high-pressure impulses. In a modification, the tube 15 is extended to join the truncated end of the conical screen 16.
