Abstract

1372908 Silencers SILENTOR AS 21 Nov 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 53755/72 Heading F1B A silencer to reduce noise propagation by gaseous fluid flow, e.g. in I.C. engine exhaust pipes comprises an expansion chamber casing 1, 2, 2' with inlet and outlet pipes 5, 6, the inlet pipe 5 extending into the casing at 5'and having at its end a cross plate diffuser (plates 7 and 8) to admit fluid to the expansion chamber in the form of a thin curtain. The diffuser is preferably axisymmetric and has its flow limiting plates 7, 8 connected by radial ribs 9 with concave upstream edges 12 with rounded cross-sections. The inlet pipe 5', 5 "is surrounded by sound-absorbing material 13. The casing may comprise cylindrical shell 1 and end plates 2 with the inlet and outlet radially directed or may be as in Figs.4 and 5 (not shown) with inlet and outlet on the axis of cylindrical shell 1. There may be two or more inlet pipes, e.g. one for each cylinder of the engine and several outlet pipes or several silencers may be combined in series. The silencer may be used in suction plants e.g. for the renewal of air in rooms or as an intake silencer for I.C. engines and compressors.
