Abstract
258,268. Maxim Silencer Co., (Assignees of Maxim, H. P.). Sept. 8, 1925, [Convention date]. Silencing air suction. - A silencer for the intakes of compressors, blowers, and the like or for engine exhaust comprises a spiral sheet scroll 15 interposed between header plates 4, 20 to form a continuous spiral passage from an axial chamber 26 to a peripheral opening 24. The wall of the scroll is made up of sections 15<1> overlapping at 16 and secured together by radial bolts 17 and distance pieces 18. The scroll is enclosed in an outer shell 1, an expansion chamber being provided between the plate 20 and the end plate 3 of the outer shell. The end plates 3, 4 are provided with central openings having flanges 7, 14 for connection with inlet and outlet pipes, and a flange 8 on the opening 6 prevents liquid from draining into the inlet pipe when the silencer is vertical. Drain-holes 9, 11 closed by plugs 10, 12 may be provided. In a modification, the outer casing is omitted, the scroll being assembled between end plates connected by an axial bolt, one of the plates having a central tapered throat for connection to an inlet pipe, and the gases escaping at the periphery of the scroll.
