Abstract

The exhaust gases flow along the tube (2) into the centre of the spherical expansion chamber. The outlet from the expansion chamber is through the pipe (3) the axis of which lies on a radius of the sphere (1) and at right-angles to the axis on teh inlet pipe (2). The efficiency of the silencer can be improved by fitting a perforated end cap to the pipe (2) and also perforating the wall of the pipe near the end cap. A further increase in attenuation may be achieved by adding a second spherical expansion chamber at the end of the pipe (3) with its outlet perpendicular to the axis of the pipe (3).
