Abstract
1431662 Silencing gaseous flow DONALDSON CO Inc 25 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 19711/73 Heading F1B [Also in Divisions H3-5] Acoustic energy of a predetermined wavelength in a fluid-flow in a duct 17 is coupled into a chamber 19 through holes 20 or diaphragms, in the separating wall, of a size and spacing such that the phase of a wave is shifted , the wave travels in the same direction in the chamber and substantially no acoustic energy of the wave returns the holes or diaphragms during coupling. The centres of the holes or diaphragms are spaced apart along the duct by, an odd multiple of one-quarter of the predetermined wavelength. The chamber 19 may contain acoustic energy absorbing material 21, e.g. fibreglass. Several chambers 19 may be coupled to the duct 17 along its length, each for a particular wavelength. The chamber 19 may be formed by a duct connected to the duct 17 for fluid-flow from the downstream end of one to the upstream end of the other, Fig. 4 (not shown), or as a duct open at one end but closed at the other, Fig. 5 (not shown), to provide partial or complete acoustic reflection. The sizes of the holes 20 or diaphragms may be calculated or determined experimentally, one example being given in the Specification. The coupling arrangements may be used for silencing internal combustion engine intake or exhaust systems and be combination with other types of silencing.
