1394748 I C engine exhaust gas silencers CHILCOTTS Ltd 12 June 1973 [15 June 1972] 28007/72 Heading F1B Approximately half, e.g. four-ninths to fiveninths, of the circumference of a portion of the or each inlet pipe 10 in the expansion chamber 8 of a silencer is removed to permit exhaust flow into the chamber and in flowing to the or each outlet pipe 12 the direction of gas flow is reversed. A portion of the or each outlet pipe 12 from the chamber 8 may be similarly removed. The pipes 10 and 12 may have perforations and the pipe 12 may extend through a chamber 7 filled with sound-absorbing material. The axes of the pipes 10 and 12 may be in a common plane or at the corners of a triangle, Fig.4 (not shown). The outlet pipe (32), Fig.5 (not shown), may extend into the expansion chamber (28) through the inlet chamber (26) of the silencer.
