Abstract
777,821. Silencing systems. EBERSPACHER, W., EBERSPACHER H., [trading as EBERSPACHER, J.]. Feb. 26, 1953, No. 5370/53. Class 7 (2). In a silencing system for two-stroke and four-stroke engines, the silencer 8 is provided with a conically-widening resonance expansion chamber 5", Fig. 4, of a determined widening ratio and internal volume whereby the vibrations of the exhaust gases flowing in the pipe are decisively tuned, and silencing and sound-reflecting parts, positioned within the silencer and behind the chamber, comprise chambers 31 with connecting channels 32 of determined dimensions for optimum silencing to form an acoustic filter. The angle of divergence of the chamber is between 4 and 12 degrees, and the volume of the chamber is greater than one half but smaller than four times that of the exhaust pipe. In modifications, (a) the exhaust pipe 2, Fig. 11, extends into the chamber 23 and terminates in an acoustic filter 4, and (b) the pipe 2 is curved or is in the form of a loop 27, Fig. 13.
