Abstract
341,634. Exhaust silencers. WOOD, W. J., 97, Rea Street, Birmingham. Nov. 26, 1929, No. 36136. [Class 7 (ii).] The silencer comprises an outer casing consisting of a cylindrical inlet portion 4a, a conical portion 4b, a cylindrical portion 4c and a fishtail outlet 4d, the parts being welded together and the joints ground. A strap 5 welded to the casing. facilitates attachment to the vehicle. Within the casing is disposed a conical member 6 the angle of the cone being less acute than that of the truncated portion 4b. This member is secured to the casing at 6c either by spot-welding or by screws, is open at its rear end and is provided in its conical wall with a number of slits 6b, the leading edges of which may be chamfered in the direction of flow. Part of the gases flows through the annular space between the casing and inner member, and part through the slits.
