Abstract

456,724. Exhaust silencers. VOKES, C. G., 95, Lower Richmond Road, Putney, London. May 16, 1935, No. 11734. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencing-device comprises two or more silencers designed to produce different resulting noises, and means whereby the gases may be caused to take alternative paths, each of which includes passage through one or more of the silencers. The Figure shows two silencers 1, 2 connected to a common inlet 14 fitted with a valve 17 adjustable to cut out either silencer, the valve being preferably spring-pressed into the one or the other position ; or the valve may be adjusted so that the gases pass through both silencers. The silencer 1 comprises a series of Venturi tubes 6 with curved baffles 7, 8 at each end which cause an ejector action upon the gases entering the space surrounding the Venturi tubes. The silencer 2, which is intended to produce less back-pressure but greater silence, is composed of conical chambers 11, some of which may have deflector plates 12 giving a whirling action. The valve 17 could be replaced by interconnected butterfly valves in the two branches 15, 16. A silencer such as that described in Specification 414,114 may be used in place of either of the silencers 1, 2, or in addition thereto. Also, the silencers may be arranged in series with a cut-out valve between them. Specifications 243,455, [Class 7 (ii)], 420,675, and 448,878 also are referred to.
