Abstract

398,359. Exhaust-silencers. PLESSY, F. M., Velsen Geislautern, Sarre, France. Oct. 28, 1932, No. 30253. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1931. [Class 7 (ii).] Exhaust gas is discharged through a conduit 1 divided into sections 1<1>, 1<2> &c., the spaces 51, 52 &c. between the sections communicating with chambers 2<1>, 2<2> &c. It is stated that the chambers damp the vibrations arrested by the inertia of the mass of gas contained in the next succeeding section. The volumes of the chambers may be varied by pistons, and the volumes of the pipe section by sliding sleeves telescoping within the sections or, as shown in Fig. 4, both may be varied simultaneously by sliding combined diaphragms and sleeves. By these means the factors of inertia and volume can be adjusted to suit different running conditions of the engine. As a modification, several groups of gaseous masses with associated chambers may be arranged in series, each group consisting of like gaseous masses and chambers, the masses and chambers of successive groups, however, differing from one another.
