Gases, e.g. exhaust gases, enter ing an inlet 11 are constrained by means such as a baffle 16 to flow along and around a narrow annular space 17, e.g. 3/ 16 to “ inch radial thickness between tubular members 10, 15 and from one member tc the other, for instance through apertures 20. A chamber 23, which may be packed with sound-absorbing material such as glass wool and/or an expansion chamber 22 may be provided, and an outlet 12 preferably having apertures 24 may extend through the chamber 23. The space 17 may be terminated by a baffle 18 having apertures allowing the gases to enter the chamber 22. Specification 638,666 is referred to.
