506,209. Exhaust-silencers. BURGESS LABORATORIES, Inc., C. F. March 11, 1938, Nos. 7598 and 7599. Convention dates, March 11, 1937 and July 29, 1937. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises a casing 10 with inlet 15 and outlet 16 leading to and from end chambers 19 and 20 formed by partitions 17 and 18, a perforated tube , 22 being' arranged in line with the inlet, with its open end opposite the inlet and closed at the other end, and a second perforated tube 23 being arranged in line with the outlet and open at both ends. The partition 18 may be formed with perforations 24, and the closed end of the tube 22 may also have a few small openings. A second closed-ended tube. 22 may be arranged either in parallel or in series with the first. In the parallel type, one tube 22 is in line with the inlet, while the other is angularly spaced therefrom and from the tube 23, and opens into an additional chamber formed by a further partition spaced to the right of that which holds the open end of the first tube 22. Fig. 6 shows a silencer with two tubes 53, 58 arranged in series, each formed with slots 55, 59 at the inlet end and closed at the other end, with perforations at 57, 64. Outlet occurs through an open-ended perforated tube 62. Packing of steel wool or glass silk may be provided at 63.
