Abstract
517,969. Exhaust and like silencers. BURGESS BATTERY CO. July 12, 1938, No. 20655. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1937. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises perforated tubes 18; 19, 20 arranged in a casing 10 formed with end compartments 15, 16, so that the gases enter by the tube 18 and' pass through to the end 16, then return through the tube 19 to the other end 15, from which they flow out through the tube 20, the perforations in the tubes occupying from 0.5 to 10 per cent. of the total area of their walls. The tubes 18, 19 and 20, may decrease in size. In a modification, the casing 10 is of oval or otherelongated cross-section, the three tubes being arranged along the major axis. The main chamber between the partitions 13 and 14 may be divided by further partitions. One of the tubes may be surrounded by sound-absorbing material, such as metallic or rock wool, exfoliated vermiculite, asbestos fibre, or pumice or other ceramic aggregates, loose or bonded by adhesive.
