Abstract

563,110. Exhaust-silencers. VAUGHAN, F. L. Jan. 25, 1943, No. 1127/42. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer comprises a casing 11 lined with sound-absorbing material 14 sold under the registered trade mark " Stillite," inside which is arranged a spiral coil 15. To allow the gases to expand, the exhaust pipe 10 is smaller than the internal diameter of the lining 14, which preferably tapers towards the rear end, where it is about the same size as the outlet pipe 17. The coil 15 may be of mild-steel wire or of flat steel strip. The lining may be formed as a separate cartridge ready for insertion into the casing. A layer of asbestos fabric may be provided inside the lining and, if desired, outside also. Specification 534,926 is referred to.
