Abstract

720,711. Exhaust-silencers. CROWLEY, F. Feb. 14, 1953, No. 4189/53. Class 7 (2). In a silencer comprising an expansion chamber 1 and a muffling chamber 7, the chamber 1 has exterior flanges for cooling the gases and a central passage 2 provided with fins 5 angularly arranged with respect to the axis of the passage so that a helical motion is imparted to the gases. The passage may taper from the inlet to the outlet end of the chamber 1, and the chamber 7 may include a perforated inner tube 10 surrounded by sound-absorbing material II such as steel wool or glass wool. The inlet tube 3 of the chamber 1 and the outlet cap 9 of the chamber 7 may each be provided with a number of different external diameters as shown to facilitate the fitting of exhaust and tail pipes of different sizes.
