Abstract
515,132. Silencers for gaseous currents. BURGESS BATTERY CO. July 12, 1938, Nos. 20634 and 20635. Convention dates, July 14, 1937, and July 1, 1938. [Class 7 (ii)] A retroverted-passage silencer comprises a casing 35, Fig. 6, with partitions 42, 43, 44 and end walls 36 and 37 formed with inlet and outlet openings 38 and 39, the partition 42 having two eccentric openings 49, 50 fitted with perforated tubes 51, 52 leading into the compartment 46, while a central perforated tube 53 is connected to the outlet 39 and passes through the other partitions 43, 44 into the chamber 46. The tubes may be welded together. The chambers have a resonating effect, and one or more of them may be packed with sound-absorbing material such as metallic or rock wool, exfoliated vermiculite, asbestos fibre,.or pumice, or other ceramic aggregates, loose or bonded with adhesive. In a modification, the gases flow in the reverse direction, entering through the central perforated tube. In another form, the chamber is divided into two by a central partition, through which pass a number of eccentric perforated tubes opening at opposite ends into the two chambers, and connected to ' central perforated tubes projecting one into each chamber from the inlet and outlet openings respectively. Fig. 11 shows another form with end chambers formed by partitions 95, 97, which have eccentric openings, fitted as shown with perforated tubes 96, 98. In Fig. 13, a central inlet tube 105 is surrounded by an open-ended perforated chamber 106 with closed end 107 which causes the gases to flow back into the outer annular passage 110 leading to the outlet 104. The openings in the perforated tubes may occupy from 0.01 to 10 per cent. of the area of their walls. The outer casing may be oval br angular.
