Abstract

495,576. Exhaust - silencers &c. SERVAIS, F. J. J. May 22, 1937, No. 14293. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for exhaust or other gaseous currents comprises a casing 10 provided with one or more annular sound-absorbing units 15 each comprising a free passage surrounded by fibrous or like material and made of less length than the casing so as to leave one or more expansion chambers or resonators 16 at one or both ends of the casing, or intermediate the same, the gaseous currents being split up prior to their entry, or after their exit from the passage, or both, for example by extending the expanded metal to form a thimble 20. The sound-absorbing filling is preferably as described in Specification 447,376, and may comprise a central tube 13 of expanded metal or like openwork material which extends in a spiral 14 through the surrounding mass of steel wool &c. The inner end may be covered by a closed or perforated plate 17. In a modification, Fig. 6, two units are arranged as shown to give a tortuous path to the gases ; or several passages may be arranged side-by-side within the casing. The expansion chambers may be lined with sound-absorbing material.
