Abstract

841,828. Exhaust-silencers. EBERSPAECHER, W., and EBERSPAECHER, H., [trading as EBERSPAECHER, J. [Firm of] ]. Sept. 5, 1956 [Sept. 6, 1955], No. 27212/56. Class 7(2). A hollow, cylindrical casing 3 having a central passage for the pulsating flow of gases, such as a silencer for internal-combustion engines, is packed in the annulus around the passage with sound-absorbing material 4 and includes a central, cylindrical perforated wall 1 surrounded by a fine-mesh screen 5 and an outer perforated wall or a screen 6 associated with the packing and surrounding the screen 5. As shown in Fig. 1, a perforated duct 1 is enclosed in finemesh gauze 5 over which is disposed a perforated tube 6, the casing 3 of the silencer being filled with sound-absorbing material such as metal shavings or glass wool. In modifications, (a) there is an expansion chamber 12, Fig. 2, adjoining a chamber filled with soundabsorbing material 4, the inlet pipe 7 having a perforated closure 11 and being coaxial with the exhaust pipe 8; a perforated transverse partition 9 is backed by gauze and a perforated plate 10, (b), the sound-absorbing material 4 is simultaneously wound convolutely with gauze and around a perforated duct, (c) the sound-absorbing material 4 comprises concentric layers with intervening layers 14, Fig. 5, of gauze, there being transverse layers 15 of gauze, and (d) a gauze layer 16, Fig. 6, separates a coarse sound-absorbing material 17 from a fine sound-absorbing material 18 such as basalt wool, a helical member being disposed within the duct 1.
