Abstract

472,452. Silencing gaseous currents ; filtering air. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1936, No. 29162. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1935. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a silencer wherein gases passing through telescoping imperforate tubes 14, 15 are subjected to the action of a resonator chamber 10 connected to the annular passage 13 between the tubes 14, 15, the length of this annular passage is increased by providing one or more additional tubes such as 29 around the outer tube 14. The chamber 10 may be divided by a partition 19 into chambers 17, 18 connected by a tube 20. A filter 23 is shown fixed above the silencer, the gases entering at 27 and passing through the filtering-material by means of holes 24, 25, and then down the central tube 22, as shown by the arrows. The bottom 30 of the filter is stepped to fit into the silencer and contains oil. The tube 14 may be connected to the air inlet of a carburetter. In a modification, a perforated partition is arranged beneath the filtering-element 23. Specification 417,935 is referred to.
