448,878. Exhaust and like silencers. BLANCHARD, J., 1, Ravenna Road, Putney, London. Dec. 18, 1934, No. 36315. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for the exhaust or intake of engines and compressors comprises one or more units having an inlet passage 12 leading into a passage 10 surrounded by a chamber 15 the gases in which are subjected to the injector action of the gases entering at 12. Fig. 1 shows a casing 1 containing an inner cylinder 4 of reticulated material which is fitted with several of the above-described units, the last issuing into a perforated cone 17. The passages 10 are of Venturi shape, a curved member 12 being provided at each end, so that the greater portion of the gases pass straight through, but some are deflected by the right-hand member 12 into the chamber 15 and are again drawn into the main stream by injector action of the gases entering the left-hand member 12. Some gases also escape through the perforations in the cylinder 4 and flow along the outer annular space to the exit chamber 7. Deflectors for giving the gases a whirling motion may be provided in the chamber 7 or within the cone 17, and these may be such as to cause the whirling to be reversed periodically. A fairing sleeve 18 may be fitted around the tubes 10, or this sleeve may be of conical form having its lefthand end connected to the cylinder 4. In a modification, the cylinder 4 is omitted, and the tubes 10 may be surrounded by a casing formed of two hemispherical sections. Figs. 3 and 4 show another form, comprising a pipe 26 fitted within an oval casing 1 and having inlet and exit pipes 24, 25 projecting into opposite ends, the spaces 27, 28 surrounding the pipes 24, 25 being connected by pipes 29, 30.
