Abstract

576,461. Intake silencers; treating charge. AC-SPHINX SPARKING PLUG CO., Ltd., and BROWNE, D. B. Sept. 22, 1944, No. 18129. [Class 7 (ii)] An air intake silencer comprises a cylindrical casing 1, two or more resonator chambers A, B in communication with a central air tube 2 and a coaxial expansion chamber C from which air passes at right angles through an outlet pipe 3, provided at a re-entrant part of the casing, to a carburetter inlet. The air enters the chamber C through a smooth passage formed between the flared end 11 of the tube 2 and the indented end of the casing 1. Additional resonator chambers may be connected in series or parallel to the chambers A, B. Air enters the casing through wire mesh 6 and felt pads 7 are provided at one, or both ends, of the casing which may be formed by detachable caps secured to a central rod or rods. One or more apertures may be formed in the tube 1 to provide direct communication with the outlet tube 3. The silencer may be used with or formed integral with an air filter of the centrifugal, oil bath or fibrous type.
