Abstract
527,370. Air filters. ARNALL, J. April 6. 1939, No. 10801. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A silencer for engine exhaust, or the intake to engines, compressors &c. comprises a conveying annular passage 21 connected to a main silencer chamber 1 having a conical partition 7 leading to a perforated central tube 6. Exhaust gases enter by the tube 6 and pass out of the passage 21 at 20, where there may be provided a deflector 17 for arresting sparks. When used as an intake silencer, the flow is in the reverse direction. The passage 21 is lined with felt material such as that known by the Registered Trade Mark " Mascolite, " or papier mache, " Bakelite," (Registered Trade Mark) wood, rubber, or, in the case of exhaust gases, asbestos ; or the passage may be formed by a pressing of non-resonant material. A perforated partition may be provided at 9. An air filter may be obtained by forming the conical partition 7 with holes, closing the end of the pipe 6, and filling the space 22, through which the inlet air is thus made to pass, with coiled metal coated with thick oil. The passage 21 may be varied by adjustment of the conical members composing it by means of bolts and nuts, and its crosssection may be square instead of circular.
