Exhaust silencers.-An outwardly-flared extension 1 adapted to be secured by a split tubular portion 1<a> to the exhaust pipe, carries an axially located bolt 3 on which is mounted a baffle 6 provided with spacing webs 5 and adapted to form with the edge of the extension a. narrow peripheral outlet passage 8. Adjacent the passage 8 a narrow passage 9 may be formed by a member 10, the suction produced by the flow of exhaust being utilized to draw air through a pipe 11 from any space connected thereto. The members 10, 6 are secured by a nut 7, but the member 10 may be dispensed with. In a modification, a series of pairs of members 1 and 6 may he arranged on the bolt 3 and held together by a common nut. In a further modification, Fig. 4, a number of outlet passages 8 are produced by a series of pairs of members enclosed in a casing 15 into which the exhaust is discharged and from which it escapes through an annular nozzle 16 across an annular gap 17 formed between the edge of casing 15 and the free edge of an annular chamber 18 into which air is drawn through an inlet 20. Each baffle except the last has a central aperture 14 to permit the gas to flow through the silencer and the spacing webs 5 bear against shoulders 4a. In a still further modification the casing 15 is flanged and secured to the wall of an aeroplane and registers with an aperture therein. The annular chamber 18, Fig. 4, is omitted and the inlet 20 for air is formed in the casing 15 near the inlet end of the silencer.
