Exhaust silencers.-In a silencer having between its inlet and outlet ends a number of passages of different lengths, the extremities of these passages are in the form of parallel-sided elongated ports terminating flush with a flanged end of the silencer body. The body consists, in one form, of a casting in two parts 1, 1 secured by bolts. A number of walls 7 cast with each part extend from the inlet end 2 to outlet end 3 to form the passages of different lengths which are widened at their middle portions to form expansion chambers. In a modification, air passages 8, Fig. 6, are formed between the deflector walls 7. Two silencers may be connected in series, Fig. 6, with their planes at rightangles to one another, and the combined units may be enclosed in a casing 9 provided, with an inlet 10 for air which mixes with the exhaust before issuing from pipe 11. In a further modification, the passages of different lengths are formed by a number of rectangular tubes the inlet and outlet ends of which are brazed together.
