Abstract

356,864. Silencing percussive tools. METROPOLITAN ELECTRIC TRAMWAYS, Ltd., 55, Broadway, Westminster, and MILLER, C., 103, Greengate, Plaistow, London. July 11, 1930, No. 21039. [Class 124.] A silencer for attachment to the exhaust-ported wall of a fluid-pressure percussive tool, e.g. a road breaker or the like, comprises an open-sided casing 10 consisting of two end plates 11, 12 and a curved wall 13, forming a crescent - shaped chamber adapted to be placed with its open side against the cylinder 15, Fig. 2, and to be held snugly thereagainst by lugs 32 and bolts 34. The silencer comprises an expansion chamber 28 adapted, when in position, to envelop the exhaust port 36, the gases passing from said chamber through staggered apertures 22, 24 in spaced baffle plates 17, to outlet apertures 30 in the lower plate 12. The baffle plates are positioned by distance-pieces 20 threaded over bolts 19. To obviate difficulties due to freezing of moisture. a fluid at a temperature above freezing point, e.g, air from the valve-box of the machine, may be admitted to the expansion chamber through an inlet 38.
