Abstract

342,364. Exhaust silencers. WALKER, R., 91, Dorset Road, Harehills, Leeds. April 30, 1930, No. 31207. [Class 7 (ii).] Relates to silencers of the type comprising an expansion chamber having internal baffles formed as flat discs disposed at right-angles to the main axis of the chamber, and against each of which the gases are caused to impinge prior to passing through holes therein, or through spaces afforded between them and the walls of the chamber, the holes in or spaces afforded by alternate transverse baffles being located opposite the solid parts of intermediate baffles. According to the invention, the area or combined area of the passage or passages at any given cross-section of the chamber is equal to or greater than that of the inlet to the chamber, and the outlet from the latter has the same or a greater area than that of the inlet. Several constructions are described. In Fig. 1, the expansion chamber 2 has an inlet 1 and an outlet 3. It is fitted with alternately large and small baffle discs 4, the large discs fitting the chamber and being provided with holes of area equal to or greater than that of the inlet pipe 1. The small discs are opposite each hole, and the spaces between the peripheries of these discs and the chamber 2 are equal to or greater than that of the inlet. The discs are interconnected and positioned by strips 7. In a modification, the expansion chamber is in the form of a fishtail. In another modification, Fig. 5, the small discs 4 are mounted in a tube 8 to form a series of sections each having portions cut away to form inlet and outlet apertures 9. The large discs are mounted on the tube and extend to the wall of chamber 2. In a still further modification, the discs all extend to the wall of chamber 2 and have portions of their peripheries cut away, a solid portion in one disc being opposite an opening in an adjacent disc.
