Description

G. GORMAGK.
MUFFLER.
APPLICATION FILED mum. 1912.
1,040,628. Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
GEORGE CORMACK, OF PLANO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO TNDEPENDENT HARVESTER;
COMPANY, OF PLANO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORACLION OF MAINE.
MUFFLER.
Spcificationlof Letters Patent.
Application filed February 2, 1912. Serial No. 675,057.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE Common, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented newand useful Improvements in Mufflers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a art thereof.
' he purpose of this invention is to pro vide an improved form. otmufiler for explosive engines which shall be effective in reducing the sound of the exhaust without causing material back pressure.
It consists of the features and elements described and shown in the drawings as indicated. in the claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a medial section of a muffler embodying this invention, section being taken as indicated at line 1-1 on Fig. 2. Fig. 2 represents in plan one section of the device, this View being obtained by taking section at line 22 on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken at line 3-3 on Fig. 2. Fig. l is a partial end elevation of the device.
Themulller which is the subject of this invention is made up of aseries of similar sections, A, preferably of cast metal, and, placed in a pile or tier as indicated in Fig. 1. Each section is provided with two apertured bosses A through which may be assed securing bolts, B, for properly holdmg the sections together. In addition to the series of sections, A, there are provided a top section, C, and a bottom section, D, whichdifi'er slightly in form from the intermediatesections, A. Each of the sections, A, consists, as may be noted by comparison of Figs. 1 and 2, .of a boundary flange, A and a transversoweb 'or wall, A, whose function is to act as a battle late in breaking up and distributing the. orce of the exhaust gas. The space within the boundary flange, A whichis. not traversed by the web, A, has the form of a circular opening, A, through which communication is afforded between the several chambers formed by successive sections when assembled as in Fig. 1. The assembling of the sections, as rnaybe noted from this figure,
is such as to bring the webs, A, of success1ve sections at opposite sides of the center line of the muffler, so as to render the pas sage-way formed by the openings, A", a
very circuitous one. The height of the,
flange, A is slightly less than the height of the bosses, A, which extend a lit-.tlebelow the lower surface of the web, A Thus, when the sections, A, are assembled one-0n top of another there remains between each pair of them a considerable crevice, A' To properly complete the support of one section upon another there is provided ateach end of the section a downwardly extending lug, A, whose depth is equal to the excess depth of the bosses, A with the section resting upon the bosses, A and the lugs, A, it will be seen that the crevice, A is divided into four parts, which extend along the greater portion of the flange, A
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
and through these crevices it. is expected that the exhaust gas will make its escape. The total exhaust opening provided by the crevices, A is sutlicient to prevent any substantial amount of backpressure, and the circuitous passage 'formed for the gases by thearrangement of the battle-plates, A", is relied upon to a large extent to break up the force and noise of the exhaust.
The top and bottom sections, C and D,
will be understood to resemble in outline the intermediate sections, A, but the bottom section is formed with a complete transverse wall, D in place of the partial wall, A of'the section, A. The top section has bosses, C and lugs, G which correspond to the bosses and lugs of the intermediate sections, A; but this section has no bathe-- plat-e, being formed instead with a top wall,
C and a central opening, C", designed for connection with the exhaust pipe of an engine. 1
. I claim 1. A mufller comprising a chamber having an inlet at one end, a series of battle-plates extending alternately from either side of the chamber, and outlet openings in the side walls between the positions of said batlleplates.
2. 'A muffler comprising a chamber having an inlet at one end, a series of bathe-plates extending alternately from either side of the chamber and past the middle of its width, and outlet openings in the side walls between the positions of said bathe-plates.
3. A muiller comprising a chamber made up of sections, including end sections and intermediate sections, each intermediate section comprising a peripheral wall and. a
transverse Web extending over a portion of the area Within said peripheral wall, one of the end sections having an inlet opening, the intermediate sections being slightly spaced apart from one another to form outlet openings between them and assembled with successive Web portions at opposite sides of the central axis of the mufller chamber and means securing the sections in place.
4. A muflier comprising a chamber made up of a series of sections, including endf sections and intermediate sections, said intermediate sections each comprising a peripheral Wall, a transverse Web extending over a portion only of the arealvvithin said Wall,
enonen CORMACK.
