475,877. Exhaust and like silencers. BLANCHARD, J. G. May 26, 1936, No. 14888. [Class 7 (ii)] A silencer for pulsating gaseous currents comprises an inner path for the gases constituted by a tube 8, and an outer path by the space between the tube and an outer casing 1, the tube being perforated at 24 for the passage of some of the gases into the outer path by way of chambers 25 formed within corrugated or star-shaped members 17 and closed at one end 19. A through-passage is thus formed along the outer path by the depressions 23 between the chambers 25. The tube may be divided into units by diaphragms 14 apertured at 15 to provide a straight-through passage for the gases. The diaphragms 14 may be formed with tubular extensions 21, and an additional tube 22 may be attached to the last diaphragm. Injector cones 7, 9 provided at the inlet end cause a suction effect through apertures 11 upon the annular space 26, the volume of which may equal that of one of the cylinders of the engine. The cross-section of the straight-through path may be reduced in succeeding units, the perforations to the outer path being correspondingly increased. Again, the number of perforations 24 in successive units may decrease, and the outer path be correspondingly widened towards the outlet end. A valve may be provided in one of the tubes 21, 22 for intercepting the straight-through path.
