Abstract

658,562. Silencing gaseous currents. DEHN, S. G. (Fluor Corporation, Ltd.). April 4, 1949, No. 9118. [Class 7(ii)] In apparatus for dampening pulsations in' a gas stream comprising a casing 10 containing a pair of chambers 14, 15, and gas inlet and outlet openings 11 and 12 communicating, respectively, with the chambers, a conduit extending directly from one of the openings and including a restricted tube 16 of greater length than the casing and terminating in one of the chambers, there is provided a surge passage connection 18 connecting the conduit with the other chamber, which latter is closed except for its surge passage communication with the conduit. The casing 10 has a transverse partition 13 through which the folded tube 16 passes several times; the tube acting as an inductance. The chambers 14 and 15, formed by the partition, are preferably of equal size and constitute capacitances. Tube 16 opens at one end into inlet chamber 14 and is connected at the other end in chamber 15 to the enlarged outlet 12. which outlet embodies the surge passage 18. In a modification, adapted for use as a manifold silencer by providing a number of transverse inlets into the casing, the partition is replaced by an internal casing through the walls of which the inductance tube passes as described above. The surge passage opens into the internal casing and the direction of gas through the silencer may be reversed. The apparatus may be used on the intake' of the exhaust side of a piston compressor.
