Abstract

988,714. Exhaust silencers. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 12, 1962 [Aug. 21, 1961], No. 5371/62. Heading F1B. A silencer for an exhaust or other gasconveying pipe 10, Fig. 1, comprises one or more resonater chambers 20, Fig. 2, formed by closed-ended compartments of a pipe 16, connected to the pipe 10 by resonator throats 17. The compartments 20 are formed between plates 18 and the resonator throats are formed by plates 21 with end plates 22 secured along their edges to the pipes 10, 16, each throat having openings 24, 25, leading to the pipe 10 and chamber 20 respectively. In a modification the throats are formed by compartments of a tube 31, Fig. 5, connected to both pipes 27, 28, or by separate throat tubes 50, Fig. 11, connecting the pipes to the resonator chambers.
