446,579. Exhaust-silencers. UPWARD, A. R., 28, Holland Road, Kensington, London. Nov. 1, 1934, No. 31359. [Class 7 (ii)] An exhaust-silencer for internal-combustion and other engines comprises a tubular member a having longitudinal slots or outletsp of extremely minute gap dimension formed by adjacent edges of longitudinal strips c, e placed over longitudinal openings g in the tube, so that the gases admitted to the tube flow through the slots or outlets, the silencing being caused by gaseous viscosity. The edges of the strips c may be V-shaped as shown, while the strips e have flat edges. The gaps may be formed by the insertion of distance pieces d of thin sheet metal between the strips. Fig. 2 shows two tubes a placed in series in a casing b having an inlet k, from which the gases pass to an inlet i to the first tube, then through the gaps p, openings in a disc h<1>, inlet i<1> to second tube, and so on to outlet o. The silencer may be fitted with a relief valve.
