Abstract
242,743. Morgan, I. I., and Holmes, L. Sept. 29, 1924. Exhaust silencers. - A silencer comprises a cylindrical body 1, Fig. 2, attached to the exhaust pipe 4, and containing a hollow inner member 5 made in two parts 7, 8, which are spaced from the body 1 by opposite-handed helical threads 6. The part 7 is provided with a closed conical outer end 9, and with a flange 10 and openings 15 and 14<a> at the inner end. The part 8 is provided with a closed outer end 12 surrounded by a flange perforated at 13. and is formed at the inner end with a flange 11 containing an opening 14 leading to the exterior. The outlet from the body 1 may comprise a nozzle 16a, or may comprise a conical member 18, Fig. 8, opening into an enlarged dome-shaped end 19 with a row of discharge holes 20 The gas from the exhaust pipe 4 passes around the helix 6, enters the member 5 through the holes 15, 14<a>, leaves by the opening 14, and passes in a helical path to the holes 13 and outlet 16a. In a modification, the silencer comprises two parts 22, 23, Fig. 10, adapted to be bolted together and provided with baffle plates 25 arranged on either side of a central expansion chamber 26. The gase.s entering at 30 are caused by the baffles 25 to pass to and from the chamber 26 in a zig-zag path of substantially helical form. A perforated baffle 28 extends across the casing adjacent the outlet.
