Abstract

292,620. Wagner, J. June 23, 1928. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 25, 1928]. Exhaust-silencers. - Several constructions of silencer are described in all of which the exhaust gases are passed through a plurality of pipes the discharge ends of which approach one another at an angle of approximately 90‹ in such a manner that the issuing gases impinge outside the silencer with mutual suction effect. An exhaust chamber a, Fig. 2, of rectangular form is provided with rectilinear outlet slits b, a sharp edge being provided at c to divide the gas into streams. Division may also be effected by a stream-lined body d. In a modification a double exhaust pipe leads to the chamber a. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the gas streams impinge repeatedly and the cross-section of the passages decreases in area towards the outlet end b. The converging passages e, f, Fig 5, may be of different cross-section, and the end of one passage may project into the mouth of the other. In a modification, the passages may be alternately of round and rectangular section. In Fig. 7, a sinuous pipe g of decreasing bore is employed in conjunction with a smaller pipe h in separate parts. A straight pipe i conducts gas from the inlet end to exert a suction effect on the outlet orifices b. In Fig. 10, exhaust is led through pipes m to a straight tube l with lateral outlets k. Part of the gas escapes through a nozzle on the tube l and part through nozzles in the chamber a.
