Abstract
706,428. Exhaust-silencers. WALKER. G. B. April 4, 1952 [May 25, 1951], No. 12354/51. Class 7(2) A duct 1 coaxial with a tube 5, which may be outwardly tapered as shown, has a restricted outlet 3, e.g. formed by a tapered portion 2 of the duct, which is disposed within an inwardly tapered portion 8 of the tube 5, and the annular passage 17 formed between the duct and the tube increases in cross-sectional area from the inlet 16 to the outlet 10 of the silencer. The duct has a number of circumferentially-spaced and elongated apertures 14 through which gases flow to the passage. The apertures may be provided with curved and straight or inclined deflector plates 15 so that the gases pass along the passage with a helical motion to issue in an annular stream in the portion 8 and exert an ejector action on the gases from the outlet 3. A jacket 18 may surround the tube 5 and serve as an expansion chamber for gases passing through apertures 21 in the tube. Drainage vents may be provided in the tube 5 at the outlet end of the tube. In a modification, the duct 1 fits into a tubular extension of the portion 8 and has apertures through which the gases flow from the passage 17, and the restricted outlet 3 comprises a separate nozzle disposed within the duct and adjacent the apertures.
