554,039. Cooling and silencing exhaust. DAVIES, R.. and SEAFIELD, F. A. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 16027. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A device for cooling and silencing the exhaust comprises a number of pipes 13 .. 16 surrounding the exhaust pipe 12 so that a flow of air is induced between the pipes, the pipes being made non-convergent in the direction of flow of the gases, and extending one beyond the other as at 19. The annular space between adjacent pipes may be made progressively narrower from the exhaust pipe outwards. The front ends of the pipes 13 .. 16 may be connected to an air reservoir 20 formed with staggered and louvred openings 22, 23. The pipes may be adjustable axially by means of screw connections. The exhaust pipe 12 and the pipe 16 may be formed with expansion chambers 11, 25 respectively. In motor vehicles. or military tanks, the intake for the air pipes 13.. 16 may be connected to the interior of the vehicles &c. so as to provide cooling and ventilation.
