Abstract

3061. Kennedy, R. Feb. 8. Exhaust - silencers.-A device for cooling and silencing the exhaust gases from internal-combustion engines consists of an exhaust ejector nozzle A which draws cooling-water through an aperture B into the combining-cone G, whence they issue through the outlet D. Modifications are described in the Specification. In applying this device to a two-stroke-cycle engine having two exhaust ports which open in succession, the exhaust from the first passes through a silencer as above, and that from the second passes through a silencer connected to an air-pump. Instead of employing two silencers, the one shown in Fig. 3 may be used. The first exhaust blast opens the valve E and combines with the water in the cone G, the valve closes, and the air-pump connected to the aperture B removes the remaining gas and creates a partial vacuum, which sucks in the fresh cylinder charge.
