Abstract

598,947. Gas turbines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and LLOYD, P. Nov. 5, 1943, No. 18434. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group II] In apparatus for mixing the combustion products of a gas turbine engine, downsteam of the combustion zone, with cold air, in which the fluid streams flowing in the same direction meet at the trailing or down-stream edge of a boundary wall separating the streams, the wall is adapted to divide the fluid streams so that they flow in interleaved relation immediately before leaving its trailing edge and entering a mixing chamber. As shown, the boundary wall is constituted by the inner of two concentric tubes 1, 2, its downstream end 3 being flared outwardly and deeply corrugated or fluted to provide interleaved fluid channels 4, 5. The corrugations may be angular, curved or castellated. The downstream edge of the tube 2 may have a lip or beading to set up a small degree of turbulence in the fluids beyond said edge. The change in the tube 2 from plain circular section to the re-entrant configuration is sufficiently abrupt to produce a transverse velocity component in the interleaved streams so that they will impinge upon one another at an angle. The configuration of the terminal portion 3 of the tube may be such that the crosssectional areas of the flow conduits for the respective fluids remain substantially constant throughout their lengths.
