Abstract

587,512. Jet propulsion of aircraft. WHITTLE, F. May 13, 1942, No. 6525. [Class 110 (iii)] The exhaust pipe of a power unit is connected to the propulsion jet pipe so as to leave a gap through which air may flow into the pipe. In the form shown, the exhaust pipe 1 has a short cylindrical extension 5, secured to it by bolted flanges 6, 7 which enters a sleeve 4 having a packing ring 3 free to slide on the jet pipe 2. The sleeve is adjustably secured to the exhaust pipe by eyed ends of the flange bolts 9. The power unit is anchored at its upstream end and the jet pipe at its down-stream end and the connection shown permits relative movement due to thermal expansion. Ribs or dimples may be formed on one of the parts 4, 5 to keep them concentric.
