Abstract

674,641. Jet propulsion plant. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and ALLEN, S. Aug. 21, 1950 [Nov. 30, 1949], No. 30699/49. Class 110(iii) [Also in Groups XI and XII] In a fuel burning means for a gaseous propulsion jet, a casing 11 is axially disposed within the jet pipe 13 upstream of the combustion zone and swirl vanes 16 are disposed at the upstream end of the casing through which passes sufficient gaseous fluid containing oxygen for the combustion of a pilot supply of fuel, an igniter 17 for the pilot fuel supply being disposed within the casing and the main portion of the fuel being supplied to the gaseous fluid outside the casing. The casing 11 is frustro-conical in shape gradually diverging downstream and has a baffle 15 at the upstream end connected with the casing by the swirl vanes, the igniter 17 being disposed centrally in the baffle. The casing is connected to the jet pipes by three or more webs 12 and fuel is supplied from the annular pipe 26 through the pipe 21 to the pilot jets 22, and through radially-disposed pipes 25 to the main fuel jets 27. The main fuel pipes 25 may be disposed at the downstream end of the casing, and the supporting webs 12 may have spoilers at their downstream edges to promote turbulence. A plurality of similar casings 11 may be used' in the case of a larger diameter jet pipe. Both the main and pilot supplies of fuel may be admixed with a portion of the gaseous fluid or with air from the compressor; alternatively only the main supply may be supplied in either of these ways, the pilot supply being delivered as neat fuel. Specifications 624,726, [Group XI], and 659,859 are referred to.
