Abstract
859,428. Spark arresters &c. CALIFORNIA RESEARCH CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1958 [Sept. 3, 1957], No. 26153/58. Class 25 A spark arrester for a four-cylinder diesel engine comprises exhaust ducts 12, 13, Figs. 1, 2, leading tangentially into a cylindrical chamber 10 partitioned by centrally-apertured plates 25 between which is located a volute 251 which leads to a divided outlet duct 21. In a modified four-cylinder arrester, the duct 21 is radial to the chamber 10 and has bellmouthed entrances replacing the apertures in the plates 25 and an axial tube for suction cleaning of the engine's air cleaner projects through an end wall of the chamber to terminate within one of the bell-mouths. In an eight-cylinder arrester, the ducts 12, 13, Fig. 3, are arranged similarly to those shown in Fig. 2, but the cleaned gases are withdrawn through an end duct 31. In a modification of this arrester, the duct 31 projects axially into the chamber and is bell-mouthed. An eightcylinder arrester has all its inlet ducts 121, 131, Fig. 6, suitably shaped so that the tangential inlet openings 151 are axially aligned.
