Abstract

Exhaust-silencers.-A silencer comprises a casing fitted with slats of strip metal arranged in sets E, E<1> occupying successive zones in the casing, the slats of each set being parallel and closely spaced and being at right-angles or inclined to those of the adjacent set or sets. In one form, Fig. 1, the casing comprises two cones A<1>, A<2> connected at their smaller ends, the exhaust pipe F entering axially and air entering the cone A<2> around the pipe F. In the case of a silencer for motor vehicles, the layer end of the cone A<2> faces the direction of motion indicated by the arrow H. In a modification, Fig. 4, an outer casing B encloses a cone A<3> and a stepped casing A<4> fitted with the slats, the mouth a<8> of the casing A<3> entering that a<7> of the casing A<4> and the exhaust pipe F entering the outer casing B tangentially. Air entering the cone A<3> draws the exhaust from the outer casing through the annular space between the parts a<7>, a<8>.
