Abstract
993,856. Silencers for gaseous currents. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 12, 1962 [Aug. 17, 1961], No. 5370/62. Heading F1B. A resonater 17, Figs. 1, 3, 5, fixed within a gas conduit e.g. an exhaust pipe 10, comprises a shell formed of members 20, 20<SP>1</SP> in which are one or more resonater cavities connected to the pipe through resonater throats 22, 23, formed in the abutting flanges 21, 21<SP>1</SP>. In an exhaust pipe, Fig. 1, the throat outlets 23, 24, are preferably arranged at the pressure points of the standing wave system in the pipe. In modifications the two shells 71, 71<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 7, 8, have overlapping edges 72 and the throat is formed by a bead 74 formed in one or both edges. In Fig. 15 the concave upper shell 28 is closed by a flat plate 34 and the throat 36 may be formed in the flange 30 or in the turned over edge 106, Fig. 26 of the plate. In Fig. 29, the cavities 113, 114, are formed in a single plate 112 which is bent over along the line 118 to complete the resonater, the throat 116 being formed in the flange.
