Abstract
788,358. Storing gases under pressure. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Oct. 6, 1955 [Oct. 22, 1954], No. 30544/54. Classes 8(2) and 99(2). A vacuum-jacketed pipe or storage vessel comprises a rigid inner pipe or vessel, a rigid outer shell surrounding and spaced from the inner pipe or vessel, a connection or connections in the form of a rigid thin-walled frusto-conical shell. or shells connected in gas-tight manner between said inner pipe or vessel and said outer shell to define a closed space therebetween, and connections for evacuating said closed space, said inner pipe or vessel and said shell or shells being made of the same low expansion material, e.g., a nickel-iron alloy containing 36 per cent nickel. As shown, a main inner pipe 1 for conveying liquid oxygen has a branch 2 of the same diameter and a second branch 3 of smaller diameter having a right-angle bend at 4, each of the pipes 1, 2 and 3 being provided with an outer shell 5, 6 and 7 respectively, surrounding and spaced from its respective pipe. At the end of pipe 1 and branch pipe 2, frusto-conical shells 8 are welded to both the inner pipe and outer shell. Smaller frusto-conical shells 9, 91 are welded to both the branch pipe 3 and its shell 7 on either side of bend 4 and a similar shell 9<SP>11</SP> is welded to pipe. 3 and its shell 7 at a point close to junction of pipes 3 and 1. Perforated spacers 10 of insulating material mounted on pipe 1 on either side of junction between this pipe and branch 2, maintain the spacing between pipe 1 and its shell 5. Pipes 1, 2 and 3 and the frusto-cones 8, 9, 91 and 911 are made of a nickel-iron alloy and the outer shells 5, 6 and 7 of mild steel.
