Abstract
1462841 Exhaust silencers TENNECO Inc 14 Jan 1974 [14 March 1973] 01702/74 Heading F1B An engine or other source of acoustic pulsations is combined with a gas flow system and is such that when being operated to produce maximum noise, it produces a sound pressure pulse providing points of maximum and minimum compliance spaced along the length of the gas flow path through the gas flow system, which system includes a pulse converter device for attenuating noise in the pulses of gas and comprises first and second volumes 53, 55, Fig. 4, forming first and second acoustic compliance sections and an inertance member 61, the volumes being larger in cross-sectional area than the mean cross-sectional area of the gas flow path and the inertance member providing a reduced cross-sectional area compared with said volumes. The compliance sections serve to oppose changes in pulse pressure during gas flow and the inertance member serves to oppose the changes in rate of gas flow. The compliance sections and inertance member may be contained in a common shell, Fig. 6 (not shown), or may have double end-walls for additional strength, Fig. 8 (not shown). In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the compliances are provided by first and second chambers 423, 427 and the inertance by third chamber 441 containing gas flow tube 457, the first and second chambers communicating with the third via gas flow passages 435 and 443 respectively. In Fig. 10, the first and second chambers 551, 553 are connected to the third chamber formed by small chambers 555 and 557 by way of gas flow passages 531, 539 and openings 535, 543. The gas flow system may have a conventional silencer 111, Fig. 5, upstream of the pulse converter to attenuate the highest frequencies and another 131 downstream which mainly acts to attenuate low frequencies, the medium and high frequencies having been attenuated already. The compliances formed by the first and second volumes, e.g. 53, 55, Fig. 4, should be located at points which would be of low compliance in a system consisting of a uniform pipe of predetermined length and the inertance e.g. 61 in Fig. 4, should be located at a point which would be of high compliance in such a system.
