Abstract

1344334 Silencers GENERAL MOTORS CORP 13 May 1971 [22 May 1970] 14674/71 Heading F1B An exhaust gas silencing system comprises an exhaust passage including attenuating sections (20a...d) Fig. 1 (not shown) coupled in series with a low acoustical impedance volume (22a...d) succeeding each attenuating section, a pair of discrete gas flow paths in each attenuating section which transit with equal vibrational energy and gas flow to produce attenuation of predetermined frequencies as the gas flows unite at the succeeding volume. The attenuating sections comprise an inner conduit 30, Fig. 2, a helical baffle 46 and a helically-wrapped outer sleeve 32, the ends of the latter being telescoped into the ends of conduits 22'. The method of calculating the flow areas of the inner and outer flow paths and the ratio between their lengths is described so that only the overall length of the particular attenuating section controls the attenuation of a particular frequency band. Thus the desired range of frequencies is attenuated by arrangement of a series of attenuating sections of appropriate lengths.
