Abstract

752,641. Exhaust silencers.CALABRESI, G.. Nov. 12, 1954 [Nov. 13, 1953], No. 32901/54. Class 7(2) Exhaust gases are admitted to an expansion chamber 1 and discharged therefrom through a valve 11, or a movable baffle which is opened by the pressure of the exhaust gases, the valve being subject to the action of two springs 14, 18 which act in opposition to one another and the strength of at least one spring being adjustable. As shown in Fig. 1, sleeves 5, 6 of the same or different diameters and partly inserted in the exhaust pipe 3, are provided with cross-bars 7, 8 each apertured to receive a freely movable rod 10 carrying the valve 11 and a spring-actuated valve 12. The valve 11 is guided in the sleeve 5, the spring 14 bearing against an adjustable abutment 15 on the rod 10 and the springs 17, 18 bearing against the cross-bar 7. The valve 12 is rigidly connected with the rod 10 and acted upon by a spring 20. Since the springs 14, 17 and 18 overcome the pressure of the spring 20 the valve 12 closes the sleeve 6 when the engine is at rest and the valve 11 is slightly open. The valve 12 is opened by gases flowing into the expansion chamber 1 while the valve 11 is moved by the rod 10 and the action of the spring 14 to the closed position, the valves subsequently returning to the initial positions thereof so that the gases escape through the valve 11. Baffles 21 are arranged in the casing 2. In a modification, perforated baffles 39. 41 and 42, Fig. 4, are attached to a rod 35 movably guided in a cross-member 28, attached to a widened part 24 of a connector 22 secured to a chamber 26, and a sleeve 29 carried by the cross-member encloses opposed springs 37, 38 separated by a perforated disc 36. The compression of the stronger spring 38 is adjusted by the cap 31 which is locked by a ring 32. The part 24 is connected by a conical portion 25 to a cylindrical part 23 provided with peripheral slots 27 and the baffle 39 in its normal position is flush with the edge 40 formed at the junction of the parts 23, 25. With each gas pulsation the baffle 39 is displaced against the pressure of the spring 38 to a position 39<SP>1</SP> to allow the gases to escape. to atmosphere through diverging pipes 47, 48.
