Abstract
1322212 Purifying I.C. engine exhaust gases SOC DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES PANHARD & LEVASSOR 15 July 1970 [17 July 1969] 34402/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] An afterburner, receiving exhaust gas through an inlet pipe 8 coaxial with a casing 18 defining an afterburning chamber 3, has an air heatexchanger defined by casings 4 and 11. The zone 25 communicates with the chamber 3 through holes 23 and with an exhaust gas outlet 10; and the zone 27, containing a helical flow path defining partition 28, communicates with an air supply pipe 5 and holes 9 in the pipe 8. The pipe 5 is connected to an engine-driven blower (2), Fig.1 (not shown), and the flow of heated air to atmosphere through a pipe 17 is controlled by a valve 16. The valve 16 is opened in response to a predetermined load and/or speed of the engine being exceeded. The valve may be operated by the engine throttle linkage or in response to the engine speed dependent blower output pressure. The valve 16, Figs.3 and 4 (not shown), may be a poppet valve (36, 36a), co-operating with respective seats (42 and 43), Fig.3 (not shown), when closed and fully open or having a chamber (45), Fig.4 (not shown) through which air flows from the blower to the afterburner.
