Abstract

1,255,823. Treating I. C. engine exhaust gases. HONDA GIKEN KOGYO K. K. Sept. 12, 1969, No. 45216/69. Heading F1B. The flow of exhaust gas from an engine 1 to a silencer 12 may be directed through an afterburning chamber 17, connected in parallel with at least one cylinder exhaust pipe, by closing a valve 11 in the exhaust pipe connection to the silencer. The valve 11 may be linked to the intake throttle valve 20 to be opened when the throttle valve has a wide opening corresponding to high engine output operation. The valve 11 may control the exhaust gas flow from all the engine cylinders. The chamber 17 is covered with heat insulating material 25 in a two part casing 23. Each of the exhaust pipes 6 to 9 may be provided with a separate valve (11a to 11d), Fig.4 (not shown). One of the cylinder exhaust pipes (9 (18)). Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown), may serve to convey exhaust gases from the chamber 17 to the silencer when the exhaust gases from the remaining cylinders are directed through the chamber. The flow through the exhaust pipes of the remaining cylinders may be controlled by one, two or three valves.
